Consider adding your own Voice over IP; simply put it is a phone service that uses a broadband internet connection.  This new technology has some major advantages, but has some drawbacks.  Most of these companies offer you "Telephone Service" and this is really a VOIP service at a premium.  You can save money by selecting your own VOIP service.

The advantages are around cost and flexibility.  VOIP based phone systems are not tied by local office wiring like in a conventional phone system.  Calls can come into your Florida based office, and ring at the home office of your California based employee.  That can can also be routed via the public network out to an office in Germany for no additional cost.

SIP based VOIP service tends to be most flexible.  You can obtain SIP trunks (inbound/outbound service to public phones) can originate in any country or location.  You can have local phone calls world wide with this service if you find most of your customers/vendors in a different area of the world.

Many businesses and home-owners are using SIP TRUNKs to create their own inexpensive digital PBX units.  With SIP trunks, your business can have a "local" phone number in any country or state.  If your business or family makes frequent calls to certain locations, this may be the best solution.

The draw back for VOIP based service is the Quality of Service.  Given the use of the public network, you could experience quality problems.  These issues will not bother most customers, worse case you might need to place the call again if the service isn't clear.  The Quality is also based upon the company/user connection to the network.  Low latency services with high bandwidth would be preferred to cope with additional network traffic such as uploads/downloads.

Here is the FCC position and goal regarding broadband service within the United States:

Broadband

All Americans should have affordable access to robust and reliable broadband products and services. Regulatory policies must promote technological neutrality, competition, investment, and innovation to ensure that broadband service providers have sufficient incentive to develop and offer such products and services.

Description

The term “broadband” refers to advanced communications systems capable of providing high-speed transmission of services such as data, voice, and video over the Internet and other networks. Transmission is provided by a wide range of technologies, including digital subscriber line and fiber optic cable, coaxial cable, wireless technology, and satellite. Broadband platforms make possible the convergence of voice, video, and data services onto a single network.

Impact

FCC Chairman Kevin Martin has recognized that broadband technology is a key driver of economic growth. The ability to share large amounts of information at ever-greater speeds increases productivity, facilitates commerce, and drives innovation. Broadband is changing how we communicate with each other, how and where we work, how we educate our children, and how we entertain ourselves. Broadband is particularly critical in rural areas, where advanced communications can shrink the distances that isolate remote communities.

Objectives

Congress recognized the importance of broadband in Section 706 of the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which directs the FCC to “encourage the deployment on a reasonable and timely basis of advanced telecommunications capability to all Americans.” The Commission’s goals are to:

  • Broaden the deployment of broadband technologies
  • Define broadband to include any platform capable of transmitting high-bandwidth intensive services
  • Ensure harmonized regulatory treatment of competing broadband services
  • Encourage and facilitate an environment that stimulates investment and innovation in broadband technologies and services.
